LANSING — Amid continued frustration over rising rates and frequent outages, the Michigan Public Service Commission has put forward several proposals it says could bring residents relief on their energy bills.
The recommendations, requested by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, focus on three areas: reining in unnecessary costs, addressing utilities' bias toward capital investment over affordability measures, and opening more room for competition to push prices down.
What advocates say
Consumer and clean energy advocates welcomed the report but said the proposals only matter if the Legislature turns them into law.
The commission also recommended strengthening energy assistance programs for low-income households.
